American Gods aired its season 3 finale just over a week ago, but now the fantasy show is canceled. Starring Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle, the series might not be returning for a fourth season on Starz. However, executive producer Neil Gaiman immediately took to Twitter to confirm all is not over.

Deadline confirmed the cancellation of American Gods in a recent report, but Neil Gaiman has assured there’s some hope to be had. Gaiman wrote the book of the same name on which the show is based. He also works as an executive producer. Therefore, he has a lot of say in the future of the franchise. Specifically, regarding the future of the show, Gaiman reveals that Fremantle — the production company behind the drama — is “committed” to finishing the story. “It’s definitely not dead,” Gaiman tweeted of American Gods. “Fremantle (who make AG) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now, we’re all just waiting to see which way forward is best and who it’ll be with.”

It's definitely not dead. I'm grateful to the team at @Starz for the American Gods journey so far. Fremantle (who make AG) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now we're all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it'll be with. https://t.co/Yw90PvIvGf

It’s possible that American Gods could be picked up by another network. Alternatively, as Deadline reports, we could see an event series or a movie take place to close out the series. Gaiman’s recent comments seem to make further American Gods stories sound more possible.

Besides American Gods, Gaiman is currently executive producing a live-action adaptation of his iconic comic series The Sandman for Netflix. Following Dream of the Endless — the personification of Dreams — The Sandman is a sprawling fantasy epic spanning centuries. The show, starring Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer) and Tom Sturridge (Dream), is now in production. Hopefully, it will air sometime in 2022. The writer has previously seen Good Omens turned into a TV show at Amazon.

How would you like to see American Gods continue? A movie, an event series, or a fourth season? Let me know in the comments below!
