We’ve all played one at some point in our life, be it the top down version of Grand Theft Auto on PC or the fully immersive world of Grand Theft Auto V for next generation consoles, we’ve all experienced that magical moment of cheating your way to 5 stars of notoriety and flying a tank around the map.
So it probably comes as no surprise when Grand Theft Auto Publisher Take Two announced in a financial report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that the franchise has shipped over 220 million units world wide.
Grand Theft Auto V shipped a mega 54milli0n units itself and remains the fastest selling game of all time to make one billion dollars which it made in 3 days, yep you heard me right ONE BILLION DOLLARS in 3 days, that’s an incredible number that probably won’t ever be beaten until Grand Theft Auto VI comes around.
It also managed to break 6 world records in the process of being released. Check the link leading to the Official Guinness World Records website to see the other records it broke.
The game received critical acclaim and earned an average Metacritic score of 97/100 making it one of the highest rated games ever on the site.
Strangely enough though Grand Theft Auto IV earned a higher Metacritic of 98/100 which I highly disagree with as Niko Belic was such a rubbish character. So much so that on the last mission of the game I gave up, moving on to Saints Row 2, which I thought was a better game on the whole.
But no matter what way you look at it, this franchise has changed the world of gaming, no longer do people laugh at the idea of ‘video games’ as a job, managing to beat records set by other industries such as film and tv.
It looks like it’s here to stay, and I welcome it with open arms.
