Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin was released simultaneously to PC and Nintendo Switch on July 9. However, much to the series fans’ annoyance, unfortunately, Monster Hunter Stories 2 does not support cross-play or even cross-save features. Well, for the cross-save problem, there is no “official support” so far anyway.
Hearing fans’ outcries on the internet, Monster Hunter data miner and modder AsteriskAmpersand decided to make a tool (simply called MHST2-Save-Tools) that lets you convert your Monster Hunter Stories 2 Switch saves to PC and vice versa. AsteriskAmpersand was also one of the people who combed through the 2020 Capcom 2TB mega leak and shared info about Monster Hunter Rise PC port and Monster Hunter Stories 2‘s Monstie list.
“But, wait,” you asked, “You said there is a catch?” Obviously, the catch is your Switch need to be hacked so you can access the saved data and convert it into the PC version. And vice versa, again.
Regarding save file manipulation though, in the game’s manual, Capcom warned players that if their data become corrupted from cheating and/or hacking the save file, the company might not have to respond to requests/questions regarding any save file issue.
– Please do not use software to edit your save data, as this may cause gameplay malfunctions, or the disappearance or corruption of data. If you do happen to use software to edit your save data, you will unable to revert it to its previous state.
– Please understand that Capcom will not respond to issues or malfunctions resulting from acts such as the falsification of save data or other methods of play besides the one intended.
Even putting aside moral and legal issues, there is one other technical troubleshooting problem that you might encounter. Switch custom firmware is still playing catch-up with the official updates to this day. This means that your game might encounter issues when transferring a PC save file that has the latest update to your Switch with an older game version. With that in mind, use the tool at your own risk.
Still, some fans hope that Monster Hunter Stories 2 will still get official cross-save support. Especially since another Switch-and-PC exclusive Daemon X Machina eventually got cross-save 10 months after its release on Steam (or 13 months after its Switch debut).
