Minecraft: Aqua Affinity Explained

Under the sea

Mining is already a pain before you add salt water and irritated sea creatures. If you’re planning on any underwater mining expeditions in Mojang‘s world, Aqua Affinity is a must. This helmet enchantment greatly speeds up underwater mining, although it doesn’t eliminate the penalties entirely. Even so, if you’re bent on carving out your own Atlantis, this enchantment is essential. Who needs a flaming sword when you can bend oceans to your will? Here’s everything you need to know about the Aqua Affinity enchantment in Minecraft.

You can apply the Aqua Affinity enchantment to any helmet but not weapons, tools, or other armor (without using commands). Aqua Affinity increases your underwater mining speed, allowing you to mine at the same speed underwater as if you were on land. The mining penalty while floating, however, remains (although it is lessened). To apply an Aqua Affinity enchantment to your helmet in Minecraft, you must use an enchanting table. There’s around a 15% chance of getting Aqua Affinity from a Level 1 enchantment, but almost a 30% chance from Level 30 enchantments.

Alternatively, if you have an enchanted book with Aqua Affinity on it, you can use an anvil to add it to a helmet. Here are some of the locations where you can find random enchanted books in Minecraft:

  • Jungle Temple chests
  • Stronghold altar, storeroom, and library chests
  • Dungeons
  • Mineshafts
  • Desert Temple chests
  • Pillager Outpost chests
  • Underwater ruins chest
  • Woodland mansion chests

While these chests do not guarantee you find an enchanted book, it is worth exploring these areas if you are trying to obtain any. The enchanted books you find will not always have Aqua Affinity on them, but at least you’ll probably find something more valuable than turtle eggs. With enough persistence, you’ll find the watery wonder you seek. Let the undersea excavations commence!
