Glass is a helpful block when building houses or other structures in Minecraft. While its transparency allows you to look through it like a regular window, you can also dye it in different colors. You can also use it to make beacons, daylight detectors and various decorative blocks. However, since you can’t craft it like many blocks, figuring out how to obtain it may be difficult. This guide will teach you how to make glass in Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions.
How to Make Glass in Minecraft
There are two main ways to get glass in both Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions:
- Smelt sand in a furnace
- Use silk touch on a glass block
The easiest way to obtain glass in Minecraft is by smelting sand in a regular or blast furnace. You can use either normal or red sand to make glass. If you use sandstone, it will either turn into smooth sandstone or not smelt at all. It does not matter which fuel source you use.
Alternatively, you can use a silk touch pickaxe to obtain glass if there is any in your world. Normally, using your fists or an unenchanted tool will cause any glass blocks or panes to disappear once you break them. If you have a silk touch pickaxe, the glass block will drop for you to pick up. Doing this is also helpful if you already have glass and accidentally place it in the wrong spot. You can get silk touch by enchanting at an enchanting table.

You can also craft stained glass using regular glass and dyes. Take eight blocks of glass and surround a dye of your choice on a crafting table. Since you need nine crafting slots to do this, using your 2×2 inventory will not work. Upon doing this, you will make eight blocks of stained glass. The image above shows the exact crafting recipe for red stained glass.
Minecraft is available on PC, Android, iOS, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation platforms.
