Elden Ring is full of powerful magic, and if you’re playing a Tarnished of high Faith, you’ll want to know how to use Incantations. Unlike Sorceries, you won’t need high Intelligence to use these spells. Incantations, like most powers in Soulslikes, come with their pros and cons. Once you understand the basics, however, the rest is easy. From healing and shielding yourself to breathing fire, magic provides a range of useful abilities. Whether you want to play a spellsword or devote yourself to magic exclusively, here’s how to use incantations in Elden Ring.

The first step if you want to use Incantations in Elden Ring is to acquire them. Some are simply found as an item in the world, usually dropped by Golden Scarabs. Others you gain from NPCs. Brother Corhyn and D, Hunter of the Dead at the Roundtable Hold have some you can buy early in the game. That’s fortunate if your class doesn’t start with any. You can also find Prayerbooks around the Lands Between and bring them to Coryhn or Myriel at the Church of Vows to add more incantations that you can learn. It won’t be long before you have Incantations that can compete with the game’s best weapons.

Once you have an Incantation, here are the steps you need to follow to use it:

  • Equip a Sacred Seal (the weapon type required to cast Incantations)
  • Visit a Site of Grace
  • Navigate to the “Memorize Spells” menu
  • Select the Incantation you want to equip and add it to an available Memory Slot

The Prophet and Confessor classes start the game with a Sacred Seal by default, making this process easy for those who intended to run a Faith build from the beginning. Now all you need to do is select the Incantation you want to cast and then cast it. Here are the default keybindings for each system:

PCPress “Up Arrow” to select an Incantation and then “Left Mouse” to use it
PlayStationPress Left or Right on the D-pad to select an Incantation and then “Right Bumper” to use it
XboxPress the Up button on the D-pad to select an Incantation and “R1” to use it

Keep in mind that the more Incantations you know how to use in Elden Ring, the more Memory Slots you’ll need if you want to be able to cycle through multiple spells during battle.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
