Coming off the success of Top Gun: Maverick and his Netflix movie Spiderhead, director Joseph Kosinski is driving toward a Formula One movie. In an interview with The Wrap, he said that his film with Brad Pitt would utilize practical techniques, like what he used in Top Gun.
“Certainly seeing people react to an in-camera, authentically captured film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences,” he said. “It’s almost funny to me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. Younger people almost haven’t seen a lot of it. They’re so used to CGI being a tool of big movies that when you shoot something for real, it feels innovative.”
That experience and its lineup of stars like Tom Cruise and Miles Teller convinced audiences to fly into the theaters in droves. As a result, the film has grossed over $885 million worldwide, making it Cruise’s most successful film.
“That’s exactly the approach for Formula One is to shoot at the real races and real cars and capture it,” Kosinski said. “It’s going to be a huge challenge but an exciting one for me.”
What We Know About Formula One by Joseph Kosinski
The film will be on Apple TV+ but will have a theatrical release. Previously, it was expected to only appear on the streaming platform, and this was the first mention of a theatrical release for a “hybrid model.” It is still not concrete, but the plan is to have a theatrical run.
Pitt will lead as a retired driver who comes out to race against a rookie and previous champions. He will produce the film with Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, Kosinski, and Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton. Ehren Kruger, one of the three writers behind Top Gun: Maverick, will pen the script.
No title or release date has been set for the Formula One project by Joseph Kosinski. Top Gun is currently in theaters, and Spiderhead is available to watch on Netflix.
