Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the existing Overwatch currencies, and all of the loot boxes that players have stored up, will be transferred over to Overwatch 2 when the game is finally released. The date for the game is looking to be October 4th, with the developers also confirming it as a free-to-play early access launch.

Blizzard has previously announced that Overwatch 2 will not contain any new loot boxes. They have chosen to make all the items in the game available for purchase instead. The news that the existing Overwatch currencies are being carried over to the sequel and loot boxes is promising news for players anyway.

Check out the trailer for Overwatch 2 below.

More on the Overwatch Currencies Being Transferred Over

Last night, in a special Reddit AMA (ask me anything), a spokesperson from Blizzard talked about the Overwatch currencies decision and explained that any unopened loot boxes would be automatically redeemed ahead of the Overwatch 2 launch in the Fall. “We are not transitioning loot boxes into Overwatch 2, and ahead of launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly,” said the Blizzard spokesperson.

You might still be scratching your head and wondering, “what do they exactly mean, though?” Well, credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points will transfer directly over, but Blizzard added that a new form of Overwatch currencies will be introduced as its “main” offering.

Blizzard added, “There will be things in Overwatch 2 that will not be purchasable with those Overwatch credits.” This is the reason why they will be adding new currencies into the sequel – it seems confusing to add items that can only be purchased with a new currency when the old worked fine, but it’s their call.

It’s not long now anyway until Overwatch 2 launches on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with that October 4th date still being in the company’s sights.
