The Metal Coat is an Evolution Item in Pokémon GO used for evolving particular species of Pokémon. Similar to the rest of the Evolution Items, such as the Dragon Scale or Sinnoh Stone, Metal Coats are extremely rare, making them tricky to obtain. Fortunately, the appearance of these items is not tied to any time-limited event like the TCG Crossover. Accordingly, it is feasible to get a Metal Coat at any time during one’s playthrough in Pokémon GO. Nonetheless, the chances are still slim, meaning that grinding and the serendipity of RNG are required to acquire this Evolution Item.
Getting the Metal Coat in Pokémon GO
To get a Metal Coat in Pokémon GO, Trainers must spin Pokéstops in hopes of receiving the Evolution Item as a 1% drop reward. However, this drop chance is also contending with the seven other Evolution Items. Thus, there is only a minuscule chance that a player will receive the Metal Coat upon spinning a Pokéstop.

Luckily, spinning Pokéstops for the 1% drop is not the only technique for getting a Metal Coat in Pokémon GO. By interacting with a Pokéstop at least once a day, Trainers will receive a small batch of bonus rewards, such as Healing Potions, Revives, Poké Balls, and Berries in Pokémon GO. This haul of items is rewarded to players from their “First Pokéstop of the Day” Streak. Furthermore, this ongoing objective is part of an endless milestone goal known as the “7 Day Streak!” for spinning Pokéstops. By interacting with a stop for the first time after the daily reset, Trainers will receive the bonus rewards and a single mark. Once these marks reach a total of seven, the “7 Day Streak!” will appear on their screen, and they have a very high probability of receiving a random Evolution Item. If an Evolution Item is part of the guaranteed Streak Reward, there’s a 1-out-of-7 chance that a player will get the Metal Coat in Pokémon GO.
Once Trainers have finally obtained a Metal Coat, they can use this Evolution Item to evolve Scyther into Scizor and Onix into Steelix. Scyther is a dual-type Flying and Bug Pokémon that transforms into Kingdra once it has been given 50 Candies and a Metal Coat. These evolution requirements are the same for Rock- and Ground-type Onix’s transformation into Steelix. Currently, Scyther and Onix are the only Pokémon in Pokémon GO that need the Metal Coat to evolve.
Pokémon GO is available on iOS and Android.
