Dennaton Games and Devolver Digital are letting players create their own drug-addled levels, packed to the gills with 1980s neon vomit, thanks to the Beta release of Hotline Miami 2′s new level editor.
Currently, the Hotline Miami 2 level editor is only available for Windows with Mac and Linux support coming down the pipe at a later date.
This is what you’ll need to do to access the Beta goodies:
- Make sure to restart Steam!
- To access the level editor, navigate to Hotline Miami 2 in your Steam library, right-click the game and select properties.
- Go into the betas tab and select editor_beta from the drop-down list and press Close.
Your game will now update to the beta version with the editor included [editor_beta] should appear next the title in your library. If it doesn’t update straight away either wait a little while or restart your Steam client. Some also need to reinstall the game (try this if you launch the game and steam crash).
Dennaton is also asking that players and creators report any bugs or suggestions to their “Level Editing Bug Reports” and the “Level Editor Feature Suggestions” pages. Obviously, once you’ve created the perfect replica of Miami Subs in the game, you’ll probably want to share your creation with the world. At the moment, the only way to share your levels is through traditional means: e-mail, Dropbox, and other file sharing services.
Hotline Miami 2‘s mod support is highly experimental at the moment, even allowing for an early sprite modification. This comes with the obvious warning of “hey, this might not work all of the time, or at all, so just have patience.” Yeah, sounds pretty official…
Once you’ve accessed all of the necessary files for level modification, you might find yourself at a loss when it comes to actually making a playable Miami Subs themed level. Don’t worry. Tutorials are already starting to come online with more planned for the near future — here is a handy page that seems like a good place to start.
