This article is over 3 years old and may contain outdated information.

We never thought the day would arrive when we would write about Overwatch shutting down. Yet, it isn’t as bad or as chaotic as we think. Overwatch 1 shutting down soon is just a sign that the sequel is on the way. A lot of players are already experiencing the beta and playing the new version of this Activision-Blizzard shooter. After the game shuts down there’ll be a maintenance period to get the new servers up and running. Finally, given the Beta finished a while ago, the long-awaited Overwatch 2 official release date is closer than ever and we can’t wait to play it.

Overwatch 1 Shutting Down On October 2 Accompanied by a 27-hour Maintenance

Before people get scared, Overwatch 1 shutting down doesn’t mean the game will close forever. We’ll just have a quiet period without playing for 27 hours while the servers are back up again with the new update. The official Overwatch 2 release date is set for October 4. This checks out with the maintenance period. Sadly, a lot of players who engage in the game often will have to find something else to do while the maintenance is over. And for those wondering why Overwatch 1 shutting down will take that long, it is normal.

Overwatch 2 Launches in Early Access on October 4

In many other games, whenever an expansion or something else releases there’s usually a full day of downtime. It is expected when Overwatch 2 release date arrives. While some players are eager to play it, others have said that the game isn’t that innovative nor it feels like a sequel. Pair that with the fact that new characters are locked behind the battle pass that you’ll have to grind. Overwatch 1 shutting down is one of the steps to prepare for the new game but the landscape isn’t so bright for Activision-Blizzard. It seems that the company takes one step forward and two steps back with every new game. Hopefully, they’ll listen to the players once the game launches on October 4. Meanwhile, you can still play and get your currencies ready to be carried over.
