Final Fantasy 9, one of the most forgotten (yet very critically acclaimed) members of the series, will be getting an updated version for PC, Android, and iOS. You can check out the full page detailing the release on the official site for Square-Enix. The original was released for Sony Playstation in the summer of 2000 and was somewhat of a return to the roots of the series. Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 both featured more grounded and gritty stories and characters, whereas Final Fantasy 9 was heavily influenced by the original Final Fantasy release. It was a return to the high fantasy and tradition of the earlier games and was much beloved by many fans of the series. It is frequently overlooked due, in part, to the hyped release of the Playstation 2 that same year.

Final Fantasy 9 follows the adventures of Zidane Tribal, a cat-tailed mercenary disguised as an actor. After a kidnapping gone awry, the story (in typical Final Fantasy fashion) takes on a world-altering scope, with the player caught up in the middle. What starts as a war between kingdoms soon has the capacity to envelop the entire world in darkness, and it is up to Zidane and his band of friends to make it right. It was also the last Final Fantasy release to have an exclusive musical score written by series maestro Nobuo Uematsu until the MMO Final Fantasy XIV was released in 2010.

Although they give no clear release date for Final Fantasy 9, according to both the trailer and the website it is coming soon. To whet your appetite and get a look at the graphical style, check out the official trailer for Final Fantasy 9 here.
