It has been 13 years since Jason chopped up teenagers, and he lives once again. Variety reports that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller is creating Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series that will be exclusive to Peacock. Plot details are at the bottom of the lake, but it is still a time for horror fans to celebrate as one of the genre’s most iconic killers is coming back for new killings.

Fuller will write the series while serving as showrunner and an executive producer. The writer of the original 1980 slasher, Victor Miller, will executive produce with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24.

A lengthy legal battle has put the franchise deep into Crystal Lake. A popular video game came out in 2017 with great success but had to shut down due to the legal issues between Miller and the director of the original film Sean S. Cunningham. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in Miller’s favor last year, but there are still restrictions. The Friday the 13th series cannot use the iconic hockey mask or anything established after that first movie, where his mother was the killer. So, Fuller and crew have creatively gone around that by making this before we get adult Jason slaughtering horny young people.

Horror revivals have been on the rise. Along with the Friday the 13th series, we have gotten shows like Chucky. On the movie front, we have seen plenty with the newest Predator, Prey; Hulu’s Hellraiser; this year’s Scream, which will lead to Scream 6 next year; and the latest Halloween trilogy brought Michael Myers back to hunt again.

The series will accompany the 12 Friday the 13th movies, which include the main line of films, Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 remake. The films have grossed $466 million worldwide.
