20th Century Studios has released the official full-length trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s critical and commercial hit from 2009. This film was announced 12 years ago after the Oscar-winning film’s success, and it was planned to be released in 2014. However, limited technology and other factors have led to a long delay. Now after numerous delays and a $250 million production budget, Avatar: The Way of Water is finally coming this December. And based on what we see in this trailer, it’s looking to be filled with epic battles, family loyalty, tragedy, and many underwater scenes.
Avatar: The Way of Water Trailer Features Family, Warfare, and Lots of Water
Entertainment Weekly gives a breakdown of the trailer, which features Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) living their lives in the jungle with their children. Sigourney Weaver has returned, but not as her character from the first movie. Instead, she is portraying Kiri, Jake and Neytiri’s adoptive teenage daughter, who appears to have a strong connection with Eywa, the Na’vi’s deity. She tells Jake, “”Dad, I know you think I’m crazy, but I feel her. I hear her heartbeat.” When he asks what that heartbeat sounds like, she replied, “Mighty.”
Deep spirituality aside, there is a lot of war taking place in Avatar: The Way of Water. The trailer shows burning jungles on Pandora. We also see the Na’vi visiting the ocean where the Metkayina tribe dwells. There is a clear threat taking place, as the Metkayina’s leader Tonawari (Cliff Curtis), tells Jake, “We cannot let you bring your war here.”
Stephen Lang is returning as the villain Col. Quaritch, now in a Na’vi body. Kate Winslet is also part of the cast and Tonawari’s wife, Rolan.
This trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water should serve as one last exciting tease before the three-hour-plus movie is released on December 16.
