The truth about Kim Kardashian’s infamous Marilyn Monroe dress is finally out! The reality star revealed in a confessional that she switched up the actual gown for the replica at some point during her red carpet appearance, right under everyone’s noses. However, no one seemed to notice the switch, as her glam team took care to ensure a hitch-free transition, thereby protecting the delicate, now iconic outfit.
This isn’t to say the mother of four never wore the dress to begin with. During the Thursday episode of The Kardashians, Kim revealed she only wore the real dress for about ten minutes, which included her moments posing for the cameras on the red carpet. The episode also highlighted the work the star put into losing weight ahead of the big day. After discovering she could not fit into the gown, the 42-year-old began her weight loss routine, which included daunting workouts, dieting, and hours of wearing a sauna suit. The effort paid off as after journeying to Florida for a second fitting, Kim Kardashian finally fit into the Marilyn Monroe dress, which she looked forward to wearing at the Met Gala.
Kim’s Victory Dance Was Short-lived
Despite fitting into the Marilyn Monroe dress during her second trial, Kim Kardashian knew the journey only just began. To ensure her Met Gala dreams of rocking the gown came to fruition, she had to keep up with her diet and workout routines in the days leading to the red carpet event. For her, every pound lost counted, even the water weight.
When the long-anticipated day finally arrived, Kardashian got into character by dying her hair blonde and fixing her makeup. The biggest challenge was just how fragile the dress was. Knowing they could not risk ruining the historical masterpiece, Kim and her glam team came up with the perfect way around it — a replica dress.
“I can’t risk it. It’s so fragile. No one can touch me. If anyone touch me and they get their oil on the dress… it’s just to risky to get in the car and leave from the hotel,” the TV personality voiced in a confessional.
Her team proceeded to the planning phase. Kim Kardashian revealed they put up barriers to sneak her out of the hotel in a bathrobe and installed a make-shift changing room on the red carpet, where she could change into the dress upon her arrival. Then after posing for a series of photos on the red carpet, the team had the mandate to sneak her back into the changing room, where she could wear the replica dress for the rest of the evening. Speaking to the cameras, she reflected:
“So all of this — losing the weight, dying the hair for 30 hours, leaving the hotel in a robe, getting there, changing on the red carpet, just walking to the top of the red carpet and then changing into a replica dress because we can’t risk sitting in it and eating dinner — is all for maybe 10 minutes of my life.”
Kim Kardashian Sings Odes To Marilyn Monroe
While she understood many might criticize her for putting in so much just for a dress, the billionaire believed it was more than that. Kim Kardashian likened her determination to wear the Marilyn Monroe dress at the Met Gala to a movie role. According to her, all she did was lose weight for a Marilyn Monroe role, just like any actor would do to play a specific character better. She voiced her admiration for the legendary actress, who first rocked the infamous dress in 1962 while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. Kim divulged:
“I love that Marilyn was a normal girl and figured it out. She became the most famous person in the entire world. It’s just fascinating.”
Going further, Kim revealed the significance of this year’s Met Gala to her. She explained how the red carpet event, for her, reflected determination, hard work, and an avenue to have her own voice and vision and make things happen. Channeling her inner Marilyn Monroe helped her to do just that, filling her with more willpower than she ever mustered her entire life.
