Ultra Wormhole in the Sky in Pokémon GO
This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Similar to how Hoopa’s mysterious portal-esque rings previously caused a stir in Pokémon GO, the Ultra Wormholes appearing during the autumn season of 2022 have also been having a similar effect. Not every Trainer who plays the game stays consistently up to date with Niantic’s latest announcements, updates, and other content-related notifications. So naturally, being surprised by massive, otherworldly wormholes appearing in the AR realm is undoubtedly an expected reaction to have for many casual fans. Continue reading to learn more about what Ultra Wormholes are and what purpose they serve in Pokémon GO.

How Do Ultra Wormholes Work in Pokémon GO

Ultra Wormholes in Pokémon GO serve as a visual indication that a special pocket monster known as an Ultra Beast is about to appear. Specifically, these portals will spawn above Gyms, similar to how Eggs will appear above Gyms before a Raid is about to begin. Therefore, players can be sure a rare Ultra Beast Raid will soon occur.

Lore-wise, Ultra Wormholes are the extra-dimensional passageways that Ultra Beasts use to enter the world of Pokémon GO, according to The Games Cabin. After an Ultra Beast appears, Trainers must gather their most combat-worthy pocket monsters to the Raid and battle the beast in the Gym. Like five-star and Elite Raids, Ultra Beast Raid Bosses typically require three to five Trainers to be defeated. These otherwordly creatures are much stronger than normal Pokémon and even match in strength to most Legendaries. Therefore, players must be well-prepared if they ever hope to take down and catch an Ultra Beast in Pokémon GO.

GosuNoob has stated that Ultra Wormholes do not often appear like Raid Eggs that spawn on a daily basis. Instead, they only can be encountered during limited-time events like Test Your Mettle. As of November 2022, there are still several Ultra Beasts that have yet to debut in the game. However, Niantic is gradually introducing players to new pocket monsters, such as the recent addition of Guzzlord during The Greedy Gluttons Event. Accordingly, casual fans who pay little attention to game updates or upcoming events can know that whenever they see an Ultra Wormhole in the sky, an Ultra Beast’s entrance is soon to appear.

Pokémon GO is available on iOS and Android.
