In a recent press release about their financial year, Electronic Arts may have also told us how many consoles both Sony and Microsoft have out there. Sony has never been a stranger about it, recently announcing that they have sold roughly 36 million units since the PS4 was released in 2013. According to EA’s release, Sony and Microsoft have a combined 55 million units sold. Do the math, and it appears that Microsoft has sold about 19 million Xbox One units or about half of what Sony has out in the hands of customers.

Which means PS4 has nearly lapped the competition at this point.

Although the numbers between the two consoles are dramatically different, both companies are apparently ahead of where they were at this time during the last console cycle. Microsoft has said that they are using engagement (using Xbox Live users to measure the stat) as their primary success metric. This is not terribly surprising, considering they are seemingly being trounced in the console sales department. EA did not include any information on Wii U, since they do not make software for Nintendo’s system.

In addition to the sales numbers listed in the press release, EA also touted some of their own accomplishments from the past fiscal year. Madden 16 was the year’s top-selling sports game in the United States, and Fifa 16 was Europe’s top selling title of from any genre. They also claimed to be the #1 overall publisher across both systems. The other games they named as helping them gain such success were Need for Speed, the Battlefield series, and Star Wars: Battlefront.

Do you care about the sales figures for either system? Does this just prove Sony’s dominance? Or has the growth that Microsoft has shown in recent months indicate a comeback is on the horizon? Let us know what you think!
