Nintendo recently updated its list of all-time best-selling Wii U and 3DS games, and it should come as a surprise to no one that Mario and co. took up nearly half of it. That’s not to say there weren’t a few surprises; some very wonderful games were nowhere to be seen while other supposedly lesser titles popped up to say hello. Take a perusal at these two lists to see which games raked in the most dough.

Wii U:

  1.  Mario Kart 8 – 7.24 million copies
  2. New Super Mario Bros. U – 5.08 million copies
  3. Nintendo Land – 5.02 million copies
  4. Super Mario 3D World – 4.63 million copies
  5. Super Smash Bros. – 4.61 million copies
  6. Splatoon – 4.06 million copies
  7. Super Mario Maker – 3.34 million copies
  8. New Super Luigi U – 2.42 million copies
  9. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD – 1.69 million copies
  10. Mario Party 10 – 1.65 million copies
Mario may be all over the charts, but Pokemon sits on the throne for number of games sold. Cut the number in half for the different versions and it still rules the top spot.
Mario may be all over the charts, but Pokemon sits on the throne for a number of games sold. Though that number combines both versions into one.

3DS:

  1.  Pokemon X/Y – 14.46 million copies
  2. Mario Kart 7 – 13.03 million copies
  3. Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire – 11.46 million copies
  4. Super Mario 3D Land – 10.63 million units
  5. New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 10.04 million units
  6. Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 9.86 million copies
  7. Super Smash Bros. – 7.92 million copies
  8. Tomodachi Life – 4.89 million copies
  9. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – 4.75 million copies
  10. Nintendogs + Cats – 3.96 million copies

Nintendo Land? Tomodachi Life and Nintendogs? What? As may be concluded from these numbers, the list also takes bundles into account and excludes 3rd party games. Both lists account for up to the end of December 2015, so the most recent titles (i.e. those that released very late last year) likely haven’t had time to play catch-up just yet. On a related note, Nintendo also reported falling profits for the fiscal year due to Wii U and 3DS revenue declining. But with big changes coming this year, the company’s fortunes are expected to turn for the happier.
