Sega Sammy Group is working on a live-action/animated Sonic the Hedgehog movie, due 2018.
Currently in the early development stage, the news was revealed by Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi in a recent interview with The Worldfolio.
“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”
The most recent adaption of the fast-running blue hedgehog Sonic Boom has seen success in the form of a popular kids television show, which was recently renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, Sega’s first son hasn’t been as well received in his latest video games. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was received poorly by critics and consumers alike, sitting at an average of 37 on Metacritic and having sold less than 500,000 copies worldwide. 3DS counterpart Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal was also poorly received, currently sitting at a 47 on Metacritic.
Aside from the curiosity of seeing a live-action human interact with an animated talking blue-hedgehog on screen, I can’t say I have any faith in this project.
