Academy Award winner JK Simmons will indeed be the new Commissioner Gordon for the upcoming Justice league movies. He’ll “jump ship” from Sony’s take on the Spiderman universe and play with kids in the DC sandbox for two Justice League films.

Zack Snyder will begin shooting the first of the two-part big-screen adaptations this spring, just a month or so after Batman V Superman release. Simmons is a fantastic actor that can really bring some intensity and human elements to a vital character in the Batman and Justice League storylines as he did in his Oscar-winning role in Whiplash (one of my favorite acting performances of that year).

JK Simmons to play Comm Gordon
Commissioner Gordon has always been a grounding part to the DC universe

JK Simmons will play a role that dates all the way back to 1939 when he debuted along with everyone’s favorite bat character in Detective Comics #27. Since day one Commissioner Gordon was always the connection and line between Batman and the streets of Gotham.

Gordon was most recently played by Gary Oldman (brilliantly I’d say!) in Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy while Ben Mckenzie plays him in Gotham. There’s no confirmed indication (yet) if the new Snyder films will be as dark and grim as Nolan’s, but odds are Simmons will be a great fit either way.

Currently, Simmons will only reprise his role in the second part of the Justice League films. With a solo Batman film slated for release down the line, look for Gordon to appear in the DC film universe again. The first Justice League movie is currently set for release on November 17, 2017, while the second part will hit theaters on June 14, 2019.

Personally, I think JK Simmons is just a fantastic actor, perfect for the role. What about you, are you looking forward to Commissioner being played by Simmons too?
