Shapelab has been around for some time, and today, Leopoly has released an update on the amazing 3D virtual polygon-based application. The development team has improved the texture features to give users a fascinating experience. Users can now choose to generate and export textures for their vertex-painted creations much more easily. And now here are the Shapelab February 21, 2023, updates patch notes.
Shapelab February 21, 2023 Update Patch Notes
Texture export with Auto UV unwrapping and decimation
Textures
PBR properties were adjusted to be stored in the textures instead of the vertex Export textures for the vertex-painted creations during the export process. It can be generated when texture export is picked instead of Vertex color export.
- OBJ: export the textures separately
- GLB and FBX: export the textures separately OR embedded textures in the 3D file OR only export vertex colors
Decimation
There is an option to simplify the output of your creation when exporting textures automatically. In this case, the application will duplicate your model, decimate the duplicate, generate the UV map for a decimated duplicate and use this UV map to generate the textures projected from the original model. This means there won’t be any vertex color data loss while having a decimated model with normal maps.
- Texturing requires UV maps, which are generated during the export process. Depending on the complexity of your model, the entire process can take a few seconds up to several minutes. You have the option to cancel the process.
- Note that when users choose to export textures, the vertex colors will not be exported, so you won’t be able to use the vertex color data when you import the model back to Shapelab.

Merge vertices
- Users can merge vertices based on the distance between them in the Context menu’s Poly Transform tab to apply globally or only to masked areas.
- This feature is useful when the imported model has UVs and cant be sculpted after importing it due to duplicated or divided vertices.
- This feature is not meant to simplify your object; it can cause broken topology if used incorrectly.
Improvements
- There is an improved dynamic topology sculpting algorithm, which produces more healthy meshes with fewer topology errors even when drastically changing the resolution of the mesh.
- File explorer’s file name input field turns red as a warning when you are about to override an existing file.
- There is a faster operation for Cloning and using numerous objects.
- The player can now turn off the contact cursor highlight or reduce the intensity under user preferences.
Fixes
- The dev team is still working on the issue of the shuttered app upon switching tools and brushes.
- The trigger pulls anywhere now becomes an undo step.
- Vertex paint and masks were not visible on many MatCap materials.
- Fixed an issue with buttons missing from the Mask brush modifier panel.
- Fixed the issue on brush Alphas to mirror properly.
- Fixed an issue on “Edit front face only” and “Edit connected only,” which did not always work together.
- Fixed an issue on the Options button that didn’t get the highlight when selecting.
- Raycast mode fixed to work with the Scene tools
