The Succession finale will be extended to 90 minutes, Variety confirmed after rumors circulated about an extended final episode. The HBO flagship series had this rumor confirmed by composer Nicholas Britell. It will be directed by executive producer Mark Mylod, who helmed his first movie in over a decade with The Menu last year.
The Succession finale is up in the air in terms of its direction. The series has been grappling with a deal between Swedish executive Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) and the leadership team of Waystar. As Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) try to sabotage the deal for their own motivations, things are shifting between Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Matsson in uncharted territory. Between these plot points, along with other stories between Shiv and Tom (Matthew Macfayden), bridges being burned by Roman, and who will end on top of the company, the remaining four episodes have a lot of material to tackle.
“It’s 90 minutes,” Britell said. “It’s a huge episode – like a movie.”
Succession Finale Will be 90 Minutes, the Longest in the Show’s Run
The composer has been around since the show’s premiere. His Emmy wins, and nominations have been for various songs, specifically a win for the main theme that is quite popular among fans on social media. He has also been nominated for an Oscar for his work on Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Don’t Look Up.
The finale of Succession will be in a season of HBO history that will see the end of not one but two flagship shows. Within the weeks of the show’s end will be the conclusion of Bill Hader’s Barry, which is in the middle of its final season. The assassin-turned-actor will conclude on the same day as Succession, Memorial Day (May 28).
Succession airs on HBO and hits HBO Max (soon-to-be Max) on Sundays at 6 p.m./9 p.m. ET.
