Tears of the Kingdom dials up everything its processor brought and takes it to new heights — quite literally! The grassy expanses of Hyrule are now paired with dozens of sky islands floating about in the clouds. There are even sprawling underground dungeons, too. It’s a challenge on a whole different scale, but for some, the adventure doesn’t end when the credits roll. If you’re wondering whether Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has a New Game Plus mode and Master Mode, here’s what you need to know.

Tears of the Kingdom New Game Plus Mode Explained

No, as of right now there is no New Game Plus mode in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Just as there is only a single difficulty level, so too is there only one way of playing through the game. Of course, once the credits roll and you’ve finished up the main story, you’re welcome to keep exploring Hyrule. There are obviously a huge number of shrines and dungeons to beat outside the critical path. Just know that there’s no option to start a fresh save file and keep the same items you had previously.

Is There a Master Mode?

Those who played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will remember that Nintendo added fresh content to the game as DLC post-launch. One of those updates included the “Master Mode,” which was essentially an extreme difficulty version of the experience. Enemies hit harder; Link had much less health, and the experience was overall far more punishing. Unlike the standard difficulty, you weren’t able to have multiple save files, either.

Now, this hasn’t yet been included in Tears of the Kingdom, but there’s every chance that Nintendo will do the same as in the past and include it as DLC. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything more. This seems about our best chance of getting a conventional “new game plus” experience, though it seems unlikely the weapons and items from your previous playthrough will be brought across. Again, though, at this stage we’re speculating.

That’s it for whether Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has New Game Plus. For more useful content on the game, search The Nerd Stash.

Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
