Fans of Community and The Martian rejoice: Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the rapper, comedian, and now big-screen actor Donald Glover is lending his talents to the latest iteration of the Marvel comics Spiderman franchise.
Spiderman, Spiderman…
A man of many talents, Glover was a writer on the critically-acclaimed 30 Rock at the tender age of 21, quickly making a name for himself as a scriptwriter before earning his chops in front of the camera as well.
Despite some rumors claiming he would be an excellent pick for the titular role in Spiderman: Homecoming, it is currently unknown precisely what role the California-born and Georgia-raised modern renaissance man will take. The shoes of the eponymous arachnid-inspired metahuman have already been filled by Tom Holland, while The Vulture is pegged to be played by none other than Michael Keaton. With a slew of other Spiderfriends and their acting counterparts already having been confirmed, your guess is as good as ours as to what precisely Glover will be doing during his time onscreen.
…Does Whatever a Spider Can
Plot details of the new film are being closely guarded by Sony and Marvel, though so far we know that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man will be making an appearance at some point, likely following the events of Captain America: Civil War. Donald Glover, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Maria Tomei – it looks like producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are certainly trying to keep the age of their cast relatively youthful. With many superhero movies now focusing on something more dark and gritty, it will be interesting to see if this younger cast will bring a certain level of levity to an otherwise saturated genre.
Can’t wait that long to get your fill of Glover? You can always catch his series Atlanta, telling the story of two cousins working their way through the city’s rap scene – though their perspectives and values on life frequently clash.
