Warner Bros. has finally released its new trailer for Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic chocolatier. The movie began production in 2021 and serves as an origin story for Willy Wonka. In the movie, Willy is a young man who dreams of making and selling chocolate to the masses. But to do so, he must be ready to take on the chocolate cartel that has taken down many dreamers like him. However, we see in the Wonka trailer that Willy’s got the optimism and ingenuity to pull it off. How many of those past dreamers invented chocolate that makes people fly? The trailer also features colorful visuals, dance number sequences, and perhaps the biggest highlight of the trailer, Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.

In Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka was introduced to the world. Timothée Chalamet is the third actor to portray the character in film. Gene Wilder played the character in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Johnny Depp played Wonka in Tim Burton’s 2005 adaptation of the book. The 1971 film is a beloved classic (although Dahl hated it), and the 2005 film has its admirers. Chalamet is looking to be at his most theatrical in his take on the role.
Wonka is also a musical, as evidenced by the dance sequences and footage of Chalamet singing on the set that was leaked during production.
Speaking to Vogue, Chalamet said he was excited to make a film that appealed to youthful optimism:
“To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy. That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there’s so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate.”
Warner Bros. will release Wonka in theaters on December 15.
