Marvel plans to reveal the future of the Punisher within the Marvel Universe at a panel during Comic Con. After posting a cryptic image that asks, “Who is The Punisher,” Marvel promises that all will be revealed. Specifically, it will be announced during the “Marvel: Heroes, Hulks, And Super-Soldiers” panel on Friday, July 21. The art in question is from superstar artist Rod Reis and keeps the Marvel anti-hero in shadow. If recent events are to be believed, then it is not Frank Castle behind that skull logo. So, who is this new Punisher?

In the Marvel Universe, The Punisher is usually associated with Frank Castle. Castle picks up the moniker of The Punisher after witnessing the death of his wife and two small children. He usually aims his anger at the “bad guys.” Still, his thirst for vengeance and violent ways led him to be considered an anti-hero by many.

In The Punisher’s recent series, Castle became the secret weapon for the organization known as the Hand. He developed superpowers that gave him super strength, high endurance, rapid healing, and the ability to unleash demonic energy. His work with the Hand put him in the crosshairs of several Marvel heroes, including Doctor Strange, Black Widow, and Captain America. Together, these heroes fought Castle but could not subdue him. Eventually, his recently resurrected wife shoots The Punisher and helps Doctor Strange imprison him.

As the heroes discuss his fate, Castle uses his remaining powers from the Hand to teleport to another realm. This seemingly put an end to his time as The Punisher within the Marvel Universe.

A New Punisher in the Marvel Universe?

So, if Frank Castle is no longer The Punisher, who is? That question will be answered at next week’s San Diego Comic Con. Could Castle reinvent himself and return as The Punisher, but with a new mission? Could this be the long-lost child of Castle, somehow alive and looking to dish out revenge? Or is it a surprise nobody sees coming? Knowing the Marvel Universe, anything is possible.

Just another reason to check out the Marvel booth at next week’s convention.
