Anyone who has played any Souls-like game is already familiar with some of the genre’s staples. You have towering and difficult enemies that take multiple attempts to beat. Several areas are grim and dark, presenting a foreboding challenge when exploring them. However, one of the biggest staples of these games is its lore. It is uncertain if FromSoftware established a consulted story as a rule, but many games have followed suit, making players wonder what they are reading. Thankfully, Remnant 2 proves that its story and narrative are easy to digest, even for hardcore fans of the genre.

While we understand many players try Souls-like games primarily for combat, it is remarkable that Remnant 2 offers excellent story and narrative elements and delivers them effectively. This is something we consider FromSoftware should take note of, as players have wanted to learn more about their game’s lore to no avail in some cases. While environmental storytelling like the one we find in games like Eldern Ring or Bloodborne is top-notch, a more straightforward way is fantastic as it presents players with something easy to digest.

However, we know that FromSoftware has some staples that are hard to eliminate, but if they did it with Sekiro, they could do it with future games. This last game had a more straightforward narrative and story but nothing as accessible as what Remnant 2 is trying to do. The way the game presents its lore right from the start is exceptional, as players will understand what’s happening with the main story. Yet, the easy-to-understand elements don’t end with the main quest; as you travel to other planets, you’ll see how easy it is to follow each zone’s lore and backstory.

While we know it is important to follow a game’s main story, Remnant 2 goes above and beyond to explain what’s happening on each planet, making things easier to understand. It doesn’t matter which world you get; understanding what’s going on will be easy, making your stay in that area more enjoyable. While you can still find some narrative elements similar to FromSoftware titles, you won’t be missing any crucial parts of the story; again, this is something from which FromSoftware can learn.

Still, there’s good news for those who only want to get down to shooting enemies. While the story and narrative elements of Remnant 2 are easy to follow, you won’t be spending hours watching cinematics before reaching the action part of the game. This is something we like as the game throws the most essential elements for you to understand and moves on to let you enjoy the gameplay at your own pace. More in this genre should learn and apply this to their narrative styles.

Is The First Game Necessary to Understand the Sequel?

Thankfully, no — anyone who jumps into Remnant 2 will understand the story and narrative elements without effort. This is great; anyone can easily follow the main campaign without prior knowledge of the prequel. Many news games that launch a sequel have done this or included a small recap of the previous game’s events, yet it isn’t necessary for Remnant 2.

The fact that Remnant 2 has straightforward story and narrative elements doesn’t mean that FromSoftware games don’t have them. Every title the latter makes is fantastic and strong in many areas. However, FromSoftware could improve its storytelling capabilities by looking at games like Remnant 2, which offers many things to keep players hooked for hours. Whether it is the gameplay, the Souls-like mechanics, or the challenging bosses, there’s something for everyone in this new title by Gunfire Games.
