The writer and creator of the original Metro 2033 books (and games), Dmitry Glukhovsky, has been slapped with an 8-year prison sentence. According to the Russian government, Glukhovsky has spread misinformation about the country’s armed forces through social media.

Back when Russia invaded Ukraine, the country passed a new law that would punish the spreading of fake news, or anything that disagrees with the Russian government, with a sentence of up to 15 years. The Metro 2033 creator accused Russian soldiers of bombing civilians, committing atrocities like killing and rape, and targeting non-threatening organizations like hospitals and schools, which are protected under the Geneva convention act.

Metro 2033 Dmitry Glukhovsky Given 8-Year Prison Sentence

Regardless of the accuracy of these claims, Glukhovsky was not in Russia while making these statements. He was still tried during his absence and given the aforementioned sentence. He specifically talked about Putin, saying:

[The war] unleashed by Putin is becoming more terrible and inhuman every day, and the pretexts under which it was started looks more and more insignificant and false.

An aging [man] is trying to reclaim his political libido and book himself a place in history by starting a short and victorious war. Burnt down cars and destroyed homes, families torn apart, thousands of dead civilians and millions of refugees: is it too much of a price to pay for a great purpose?

Glukhovsky believes that it was these statements that got him into trouble with the Russian government. While he isn’t in any danger since he’s not physically in Russia at the moment, he will not be able to return as it would result in the sentencing being enforced.

Dmitry Glukhovsky is best known for his work on the Metro 2033 books and games, but that’s not all he has done. Academically and professionally speaking, he used to be a journalist for Gosteleradio. And this isn’t anything new. He has always spoken against the Russian government, and this is just an extension of that after the Ukraine war.

In other news, back in 2019, Glukhovsky discussed his intentions to make a new entry in the Metro series, but so far nothing has been released. Back in 2020, the game’s developers revealed that they were working on another Metro 2033 title, and it will be exclusively for the next generation and PC.
