Next month, Kevin Smith is auctioning off his personal collection of original comic book art. This collection includes the covers and art from projects the writer has worked on. It also includes other works that he has picked up throughout the years as an avid comic reader and lover. This sale comes after Smith recently downsized from his Los Angeles home to a smaller one in New Jersey as he films his next project. The auction, taking place September 27, is handled by the renowned Bodnars Auction.

The auction will be an online-only event with a live broadcast hosted by Bodnars. However, if you happen to be in the New Jersey area, you can book an appointment for the day before to personally peruse the items up for grabs. The event is being touted as a historic occasion for the comic book community. Kevin Smith has amassed an impressive collection of comic art throughout the years. Items up for sale include original artwork from titles like Preacher, Hitman, Batman, and Sandman.

Some of the more sought-after pieces include a collection of Matt Wagner’s covers from Smith’s Green Arrow run. These 12 issues alone should bring in $1500 to $3000 apiece. There are also the interior pages from Quick Stops, Kevin Smith’s recent Dark Horse series, up for grabs. However, one of the rarest pieces available is a page from Frank Miller’s Daredevil #161. It features pencils by Miller and inks from Klaus Janson. This page should go for somewhere between $20,000 to $40,000.

The Why Of It All

All of this came about after a quick change of scenery for Kevin Smith. The writer/filmmaker recently began spending more time out of L.A and in a smaller place in New Jersey. This is because he wanted to be close to the movie theater that will serve as the backdrop for his next film, The 4:30 Movie.

Now, one of the biggest auctions in comic art history is taking place. Each item comes with COA and a percentage of the proceeds will fund a scholarship at the Joe Kubert School.
