It is almost a fact that many players spend at least an hour creating their characters. We don’t blame them, though, as Starfield offers an in-depth character-creation feature. Besides the hairstyles and other things to breathe life into your character, other mechanics will affect how your adventure will play during the game’s first hours. If you want to get a jumpstart before hitting the vast universe, we have a list of the best 5 backgrounds you can choose in Starfield.
Top 5 Best Backgrounds in Starfield for Beginners
Before we go down the list, we need to make clear these are the best backgrounds in Starfield in terms of starter skills. As you know, each background allows players to start with three unlocked skills, which means you’ll be able to rank them up faster as you complete their challenges. This should matter to those looking for an easier experience, but if you prefer the roleplaying aspect of the game, choose any that suits your character better. With that out of the way, let’s begin.
5: Bounty Hunter
Do you want to live your Mandalorian fantasy in Starfield? Then this background is for you! It comes with everything you need to get your Bounty Hunter career going, except for the little green companion and the ship; you can build the latter, though. The Bounty Hunter background gives players three useful skills to feel part of Clan Fett. You get Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, and Boost Pack Training. As you can see, this background focuses on giving players a headstart on space combat, and we think that is fantastic as you can start ranking up the piloting skill early by destroying ships; in turn, you’ll unlock the ability to fly ships of a higher class. The cherry on top is the Boost Pack Training, which allows you to use your jump boost when fighting or exploring.
4: Cyber Runner
Roleplaying capabilities aside, the Cyber Runner background is one of the best in Starfield. Those coming from Cyberpunk might take this one to hack their way around everything. While the game has no great hacking skills, the Cyber Runner background has useful skills to get your character into forbidden places and let them get out without raising an alarm. You begin the game with the Stealth, Security, and Theft skills. These are perfect for those who follow the “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” You can pickpocket your way during the game’s first hours and get a few credits to let you buy expensive ships. Remember to sell your stolen items at the right places, though; if you don’t, you risk getting caught.
3: Diplomat
Many quests in the game can end quickly if you have a way with words. That’s what the Diplomat background is about. If you prefer to convince people early in the game and trust us, you’ll need to; this background is for you. It comes with the Persuasion, Commerce, and Wellness skills. The first two are fantastic, as you can get different outcomes by passing persuasion checks, while the second one allows you to get more money when selling stuff. For the money part, pick every misc. item you see and sell it as soon as you reach a shop.
2: Homesteader
If you’re not a fan of sneaking around or swaying others, you might be interested in being a Homesteader. This is one of the best backgrounds in Starfield for those who love crafting and building outposts. Given how smooth the outpost system is in this game, you’ll need a lot of resources if you want to build your space home. This background gives players the Geology, Surveying, and Weight Lifting skills. All are great and shine equally. The first allows you to get more resources, and the last one increases your carry limit, something that is useful due to all the loot there is in the game to grab.
1: Soldier
All Space Rambos out there need to pick this background. If you also don’t like words, despise sneaking, and don’t care much for outposts, why not enter any situation with your guns blazing? While we don’t recommend doing that every time, the Soldier background improves a player’s ability to wield and use firearms. You get the Fitness, Ballistics, and Boost Pack Training skills. They all focus on mobility while on the battlefield, and you’ll need it in some of the game’s most challenging missions.

Those are our best Starfield backgrounds. As mentioned, pick these for an easier start when playing the game. If not, focus on the character you want to roleplay and pick the background that suits them best. Remember, though, you can’t change backgrounds once you’re in the game; for that, you’ll have to start over.
