A new addition to the Metal Gear franchise is on the way, and it looksโฆinteresting, to say the least. Konami revealed the trailer for Metal Gear Survive today at Gamescom 2016 and fans have a lot to say about it, as the general consensus online has been comments of disdain and confusion.ย One of the most popular questions has simplyย been, why?ย Metal Gearย Survive is the first large-scale project for Konami following the departure of series creator, Hideo Kojima, and while a Metal Gear game without Kojima at the helm seems almost implausible, here we are. Tonally and judging by the content, this is a shocking departure for the famed tactical stealth series. Right now, the number of likes and dislikes on the debut trailer are wildly unbalanced and leaning favorably toward the negative.
The trailer for Metal Gear Survive starts with the ending of Metal Gear Solid Vย prologue chapter, Ground Zeroes. (Theย Phantom Pain storyline beginsย nine years after Ground Zerosย and ten years before the events of the very first Metal Gear game). Snake and his army, Militaires Sans Frontiers, find themselves overwhelmed by a series ofย gunfire when a wormhole (yes, aย wormholeย in Metal Gear) opens up. Zombies that do not seem to be taking “no” for an answer are on the other side.ย While we do get a great lookย at series protagonist/antagonist Big Boss, in the beginning, it is not clear whether he or any of the other famed characters will have a recurring appearance in Metal Gear Survive.ย You can watch the full trailer below, courtesy of IGN.

In a press release, Konami European president, Tomotada Tashiro stated that โMetal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the seriesโ famed stealth elements, but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.โย While this game could very well be an unexpected gem, we need more time to see this develop. A zombie co-op game is too large a shift from the Cold War politics and stealth gameplay that fans have come to expect fromย Metal Gear;ย and while this new addition to the series is definitely a ‘fresh take’, thus far it looks void of the aforementioned stealth and Cold War politics. Only time will tell.
Metal Gear Survive is slated for a 2017 release.
