When Barry Allen takes off for the third season of The Flash, he’ll be in for one heck of a brain scrambling. After jumping through time at the end of the previous season, the speedy hero finds himself in an alternate timeline where, not only are his parents still alive, but the hero known as The Flash doesn’t exist. Instead, (in the comic, at least) Captain Cold replaces Barry as Central City’s spandex protector. Returning villains include Dr. Alchemy, Magenta, Mirror Master, and a female rendition of The Top. There’s also the small issue that Barry begins to forget his former existence the longer he stays in this new timeline.

Spoiler alert: This stint out of time, called Flashpoint, is only temporary. Even so, the venture promises an explosion of action packed together in less than a full season. After the first few episodes of the season, The Flash will find himself back where he belongs in his own timeline. The question then becomes, what inevitable calamity has befallen Barry’s “real” friends and city during his absence? End spoiler.
This isn’t the first time The Flash has left his original bubble of reality in the dust. He once ran so fast that he caused a crossover episode with Supergirl in which the two partnered up to take down Silver Banshee and recurring villainess Livewire. Also the time he ended up battling Arrow after being turned evil by a light show. These likely won’t be the last of the mash-ups, either. With four different superhero shows set to re-open this fall, the DC universe will undoubtedly be tossed into a blender at full speed, and fans will eat up every minute of it.
