Disney has announced a lot of new movies to be released over the next few years. One of them is a Mary Poppins remake starring Emily Blunt as the leading lady herself. And it seems that Julie Andrews, the original Poppins, approves of Blunt’s role in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns.

In an interview with EW, Blunt claimed that Andrews responded to the news with, “Oh, wonderful!” However, Blunt also said that her character will take a different turn than Andrews’. “We’re delving into the books a lot more, which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much,” Blunt said. In addition, Blunt went on to say that her version of Mary Poppins is a “little meaner.”

Many film characters appear forever locked into certain actors and actresses, which makes it difficult to recast them later on. A good example of this type of character lies in someone like Indiana Jones, who is always associated with Harrison Ford. Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins remains one of those iconic character/actress ties. However, the original Mary Poppins first came out over 50 years ago. Therefore, perhaps time and Andrews’ appreciation will lend Blunt the things she needs to really embrace this role.

Blunt said that she was excited to hear of Andrews’ comment. “I felt like I wanted to cry. It was lovely to get her stamp of approval,” Blunt said. “That took the edge off it, for sure.”

Mary Poppins Returns plans to also star Meryl Streep, Lin Manuel-Miranda of recent Hamilton fame, and even Ben Whishaw as an adult Michael Banks. In addition, Rob Marshall is already lined up as director. The movie set its release date for 2018.
