Man’s Victory Moment in Delaware Marathon Ends in Tears After Last-Minute Takoever: ‘The Last Shall Be First, You Hear Me!’

“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch”

A man in the Delaware marathon proved the perils of counting your eggs before they hatch. A TikTok video showed the final moments of the marathon, with the initial man who was leading the race by a distance slowing down as he approached the finish line. It appeared he was already convinced that he had won, as he raised his hands in cheer. Meanwhile, the person behind the camera was cheering the runner behind the person leading.

With each shout of the Delaware crowd, the second man ran a little faster, sprinting with all of his might as the crowd cheered louder and louder. With just a few steps before the finish line, he overtook the man who was already on a victory lap, turning the tide at the very last minute. According to Patch, the runner-up, who almost smelled victory, was Carson Mello, with a 26-mile race record of 2:43:14.46. However, the last-minute winner, Joshua Jackson, beat him by 1.43 seconds, with a time of 2:43:11.71.

Netizens React To The Premature Victory Lap And The Underdog’s Triumph

The reactions to this dramatic Delaware incident reveal a shared support for silent hard work over loud celebration. Some commenters turned the moment into a broader discussion of endurance and premature celebration.  One user pointed out the irony of the man’s premature cheer, writing, “Raising his arms, cheering, just running slow. The last shall be first, you hear me!!!” Another user highlighted a major takeaway from the incident rather bluntly. They argued that celebrations should be reserved as a privilege to be enjoyed only after the task is completed.

A TikToker humorously recounted how the runner seemed to be mentally preparing his speech while still on track, noting, “Bro started his victory speech, acceptance speech, and thank-you-to-my-mom moment… then got absolutely violated at the line Never count your chickens before they cross the finish line.” An individual posed the clip as an educational tool. They stated that a win is never a win until it is confirmed and warned against the disadvantages of premature joy. Another joked that the lesson from the clip would most definitely replace the cautionary tale of the tortoise and the hare. Juxtaposing the hare’s loss due to arrogance with that of the man who was leading the race in the beginning.

Some users appreciated the underdog’s diligence. “I mean, to be able to sprint like that at the end of a marathon? You deserve to win lol,” a commenter wrote. A user argued that summoning the ability to make that high-velocity sprint after running a marathon was enough of an achievement. Sharing the same sentiment, a netizen expressed sheer amazement at the winner’s endurance. They even claimed the man must be “superhuman.” A last user acknowledged the part the fan behind the camera played in the winner’s success, writing, “Your cheering helped him put his foot on the gas!”
