At last, one of the most recognizable characters in gaming is coming to iPhone.

Today at Apple’s Keynote in San Francisco, the audience received quite a surprise when Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario, took center stage. Miyamoto used that opportunity in the spotlight to show off Super Mario Run, Nintendo’s newest project, which will soon be coming to an iPhone and iPad near you.

Shigeru Miyamoto reveals Super Mario Run.

Until now, Super Mario and other subsequent Mario titles have been exclusively available to the large family of Nintendo consoles- playable via controllers with familiar buttons and a directional pad; and since Mario is not known for being the most stationary of characters, it is only natural to wonder how well a game will translate to the high-resolution, directional pad-free screens of our Apple devices.

Miyamoto explained that in Super Mario Run, “Mario runs automatically to the right…it is very simple, and the movement feels great.” With just a simple tap on the screen, you can make Mario jump. The longer you press down on the screen, the higher he will jump. The official description of the game states that “your character will behave differently depending on the timing of your taps, so it’s up to you to show off particularly smooth moves, gather coins and reach the goal.”

Play against users all over the world in Battle Mode.

Not only can we play Mario with one hand for the very first time, the game also supports player interconnectivity in a way that we have not seen in the franchise before. Super Mario Run is a multiplayer experience, and Battle Mode gives you the opportunity to compete against your friends, as well as players all over the world.

It would seem that after the success of Pokémon Go, Nintendo is slowly testing the waters of mobile gaming. We can only hope that Super Mario Run will render the same level of excitement when it is released this December. The game will be free to download and play, and will have in-app purchases.
