Already, Super Mario Bros Wonder has revitalized the 2D Mario franchise. After stagnating in the realm of the New Super Mario series, Wonder feels like a fresh take that Mario definitely needed. With tons of new features and beautiful designs, we are currently sitting at a high point for new Mario games. Despite being a strong game overall and exactly what the community wanted, Super Mario Bros Wonder does have some problems. This includes an issue that some fans found with one of 2D Marioโ€™s most important features. For some, Super Mario Bros Wonder has a bit of an issue with its local co-op camera.

Since the days of New Super Mario Bros Wii, local co-op has been synonymous with the idea of 2D Mario. Playing the game with friends is an easy way to have some chaotic platforming fun. Between messing with your buddies and tossing them off cliffs or working together to pull off some cool platforming maneuvers, local co-op has always been one of the strongest features of New Super Mario Bros. On the other hand, while Super Mario Bros Wonder has pushed co-op in unique ways, the local co-op seems to have taken a step back. Now, players can’t interact with or bounce off each other like in the older series. Though this removes a bit of the chaotic fun, this isn’t an overly impactful point.

This detail isn’t the only problem for Super Mario Bros Wonder’s local co-op. One major issue that some players are having with the game is its camera during multiplayer. As a fan has pointed out on Reddit, the co-op suffers from a problem that didn’t affect the previous New Super Mario games. Whereas in the past, the screen would zoom out and follow the general crowd, now, the camera will simply follow a lead player who possesses a crown. This screen will not zoom in or out and can easily crush or squish any player who falls a little bit behind. This can lead to some very uncomfortable circumstances, especially during swimming levels, as well as environments where players need to travel into pipes. In these scenarios, players can easily get caught out of the camera’s boundaries, leading to some unfair deaths.

This problem isnโ€™t set in stone, however, and could easily be fixed with a future update. A quick fix could add a zooming mechanic to help prevent non-leader characters from being trapped off-screen. Despite the potential for the update, some players donโ€™t really have a problem with Super Mario Bros Wonderโ€™s local co-op camera. For some, this camera adds an extra level of challenge that the Super Mario Bros Wonder multiplayer is lacking. Others also believe that it reintroduces a certain level of friendly chaos that is lacking as well. No matter how you feel, the camera could still use a few tweaks to feel a bit smoother overall. Even if it doesnโ€™t receive any changes at all, Super Mario Bros Wonder will still be an amazing game.
