Coal is one of the more important resources you’ll come across in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. Not only can it be an important crafting resource, but it also helps you to power your important crafting stations like the Stone Hearth, Furnace, and Forge. Without them, you won’t be able to cook, craft weapons, or have tools to help you through your exploration. Luckily, obtaining coal is pretty simple. You can either use Wood Scraps in your Return to Moria Stone Hearth to turn them into Coal, or you can mine them out in the world wherever you find coal mining areas.

When you first visit your new base location in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, you’ll notice there is already a Coal Pallet sitting in the back of the main room, accompanied by broken crafting stations like the Stone Hearth, Furnace, Forge, and more. You can repair them by spending minimal resources, but once they’re fixed up, you still need resources to use them.

Simply shove some Wood Scraps into the Stone Hearth and wait around for 10 seconds to have it processed into Coal. This is the easiest way to get coal in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, but it can be pretty expensive in terms of the Wood Scraps that you must use.

Mining in Return to Moria is the easiest way to get coal, but it can only yield limited amounts of coal. If you remember, when you first started out in the home base area, there was an Iron Ore vein just outside of your front door. Similar mining areas can be found throughout the game for different types of ore as well.

If you head out and search around, you’ll find a coal vein very close to the camp, only a couple of rooms away. Head out to one of the coal veins, shove a makeshift wall platform up just below the ore, and get to mining with your pickaxe. The vein will yield a good amount of coal in Return to Moria, but once it’s depleted, it may not come back, so you’ll have to explore some more to find other coal mining areas.

  • Make Coal using your Stone Hearth

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is now available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
