Nintendo and Sony released two of the most-hyped games of the year side-by-side in a race for console-exclusive domination in 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2. Based on a recent report by Gbiz, it seems as though Nintendo may be winning in the United Kingdom. The games have been neck and neck since releasing on the same day, October 20, and regardless of which title winds up selling the most, it’s already clear both games are massive successes.
2023 is a big year for games breaking sales records. Between huge names like Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and now Super Mario Bros. Wonder becoming the fastest-selling game in its franchise thus far, it’s obvious the race for the biggest game of the year has a wide pool. As the holiday season sets in, the race is only going to get more intense, and there’s nowhere that’s better exemplified than in the ongoing battle between Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2 for sales supremacy across the globe, and it seems as though the little red plumber may have taken the lead over in Europe.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2 Sales
Physical sales for Super Mario Bros. Wonder have now surpassed Spider-Man 2 on the UK charts after Insomniac’s web-slinging game initially had a stronger opening. The report states that “Super Mario Wonder dropped 55% in sales [and] Spider-Man 2 saw a 69% decrease week-on-week.”
In the United States, it’s still unclear which game is the frontrunner, despite Spider-Man 2 breaking Sony sales records. There are certainly a larger number of Nintendo Switch consoles in the country, with more than 50 million console sales in North America alone, whereas the PS5 has still yet to surpass 50 million worldwide console sales. Combine that with the fact that many PS5 units are digital only, and it’s likely safe to assume that Super Mario Bros. Wonder will have similarly strong physical sales numbers in the US as it does in the United Kingdom.
