Facepunch Needs to Stop Pay-To-Win DLC Items in Rust & Fix the Damn Game

Facepunch is definitely not on the right track.

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Rust is a brutal, hardcore game that remains a bastion of the survival genre. It’s far from perfect, though, and there are a number of issues that developer Facepunch really needs to address. But will they? It’s hard to believe given the team consistently ignores necessary fixes in favor of adding new DLC skins to Rust. As a longtime player, nothing is as frustrating as these “pay-to-win” items in Rust, which break the gameplay and honestly feel greedy on the part of the developer.

Prime examples of pay-to-win Rust DLC are the Arctic Suit, Factory Door, and Industrial Lights. These items all offer immense advantages over base items in the game, such as players who own Industrial Lights DLC getting to block their doorways with these Industrial Lights to prevent raiders from accessing their base.

And Facepunch is now poised to release Base Decor DLC with more pay-to-win items. Now this topic is subject to change, but with this DLC, the Barrel storage item is expected to be added to the game, which is unconfirmed at this time but when it arrives will give players more storage for less space.

Now, I’m sure some will point to the fact that you can often pick up many of these items by killing other players. It’s not like free-to-play players are banned from using them. But that’s not really the crux of the issue. The real problem is that Facepunch is rushing to bloat the game with DLCs instead of fixing persistent issues or adding new content. Rust has more than 4000 skins now, and yet there are a whole host of problems with the core experience! Surely, the developer is making money hand over fist and should instead be providing new content?

Things Facepunch Should Fix Right Now

Facepunch Producer Alistair recently started a thread on X and asked Rust players about 4 quick balance changes. It instead turned into a forum for complaints about the game’s many issues. Among the most consistent of those complaints was the tech tree. Players grumbled about how easy to research guns without even fighting for them these days in Rust, and I’m going along with this. Tech tree should be removed or items that you can research should be limited, otherwise, progression is a slice of cake.

Auto Turrets are also a major concern. Setting up a 15+ Auto Turret system is a breeze for a Rust Zerg on the wipe day. They can easily gather components and resources, and even loot Tier 3 monuments. To prevent this issue Facepunch simply has to limit the use of Auto Turrets or Wind Turbines just like with the Sleeping Bags.

Another issue is roof camping. Players perch on rooftops and sit there all day. This issue kills servers because people just wait for other players to walk up to their sight instead of going outside and fighting. No wonder so many players get bored and go elsewhere.

Indeed, even big content creators like Posty and hJune have been so upset they’ve moved on to a new survival game called The Front. There’s just no denying that there are tons of problems that need to be fixed in Rust right now, from cheaters to roof camping to the tech tree. But when you see a pointless new Rust DLC added to the game instead of fixing the issues that the community suffers for, it’s frustrating. Facepunch, stop with this Rust DLC nonsense, and start fixing the game!
