There’s no rest for our favorite plucky plumber when it comes to saving the Mushroom Kingdom. As the RPG part of Super Mario RPG suggests, you’ll need to manage level-ups, stats, and other upgrades as you progress. You can improve your stats in one of three categories, but certain ones provide better boosts early on. That makes Goomba stomping and princess saving a lot easier if you know the right ones to pick. Here are the best level up bonuses in Super Mario RPG.

There are three options available for the level up bonus in Super Mario RPG. These are Physical, HP, and Magic. Physical provides both physical attack and defense increases. HP provides more HP, and Magic provides both magic attack and defense. Here’s how we rank the different bonuses:

  • Physical – best early bonus
  • HP – good secondary choice
  • Magic – best reserved for later

Physical boosts your attack damage, making early fights much easier. That lowers your odds of taking damage and makes healing less of a priority, all of which makes your early adventures in Super Mario RPG a cinch. It’s wise to devote your first few levels to Physical and then start mixing it up depending on each character’s skill set. You can brute force early encounters this way, although you’ll want to diversify your bonuses later on. A well-rounded plumber is a powerful plumber.

Though characters like Mallow are better with magic, your resource pool is small early on. That means you can’t use magic often, making the Magic level bonus less of a priority. Having some extra HP, however, is always a safe pick, since you can’t go wrong with taking more of a beating. Good luck taking us down now, Chain Chomp.
