This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

In Super Mario RPG, you’ll unlock Princess Peach and Bowser for your party after you’ve completed the Booster Tower. This mid-game area doesn’t just contain the game’s last party member, but also an obtuse puzzle with an interesting reward. You’ll eventually stumble upon a locked room filled with portraits of Booster’s family members. If you interact with them in a specific order to unlock a secret room. This will let you earn Bowser’s best mid-game weapon, the Chain Chomp!

Take a look at Booster’s family portraits in order from the oldest to the youngest.

Super Mario RPG Booster Tower puzzle hint

If you’ve got a keen eye, there are actually portraits of the seven generations of Boosters in the first room of the Tower. This is the clue for the Booster Tower portrait puzzle that’s given by Super Mario RPG itself. Provided you remember the order of the portraits, you can easily solve the puzzle in the next room. But if you don’t, continue reading below for our Super Mario RPG Booster Tower puzzle cheat sheet.

Once you reach the puzzle room, count all six portraits from left to right as 1 to 6. After you order them from left to right, now all you need is the correct order to interact with them. Here’s the right order of the family portraits to solve the Booster Tower Mario RPG puzzle. Just as you can see in the picture above:

  1. Portrait 6, the oldest Booster has a handlebar mustache and glasses.
  2. Portrait 5, the second oldest Booster is the wide smiling one with the yellow hat.
  3. Portrait 3, the third oldest Booster wears an eyepatch.
  4. Portrait 1, the third youngest Booster is the gnarly-looking one with sunglasses.
  5. Portrait 2, the second youngest Booster wears a cone-shaped red hat.
  6. Portrait 4, the youngest Booster has a small red hat.

If you do it correctly, Booster will give you the Elder Key item. Use it to open the locked door to your left. Head inside to obtain the Chain Chomp weapon for Bowser as a reward for completing the Super Mario RPG Booster Tower portraits puzzle.

However, if you interact with the Tower portraits in the wrong order, then you’ll have to deal with Shysters. Thankfully, you can retry this puzzle as many times as you like.
