Paramount has just given us our first look at Halo The Series Season 2, showing exactly why the franchise is so great for a TV adaptation. Thanks to Bungie‘s creative vision, the Halo games deliver some of the best FPS action around and were a huge part in making sure Xbox remained a serious threat in the console wars. Though the Season 2 trailer is brief, it’s a minute and a half of exciting and provocative content that hints at some of what fans can expect to see. Whether you’re a veteran of Blood Gulch or have never stepped into Master Chief’s shoes, here’s what you need to know about our first look at Halo Season 2.

The return of iconic characters such as Cortana is reason enough to be excited. There was far more packed into our first look at Season 2 of the Halo series, however. A dramatic monologue sets the stakes immediately, describing an enemy at the gates with overwhelming numbers. That speech is accompanied by footage of orbital lasers raining down on a city. Soon after, a fleet of ships rises dramatically through the clouds. A Spartan watches stoically through their helmet as the laser siege continues, incinerating the terrified civilians running for their lives. Whether you think the franchise needs a hard reboot or is great as is, it’s clear the war between humanity and the Covenant is as fraught as ever.

Though the trailer is intentionally cut in a way that makes it impossible to pick out upcoming plot points, there are some things that the montage of explosions and dramatic close-ups make obvious. Season 2 looks like it may be even more action-packed than the first, featuring all the battles you could ask for and appearing to focus on the Fall of Reach. We even get a glimpse at a flashy melee fight between a Spartan and an energy sword-wielding Elite. As if that weren’t dramatic enough, the trailer concludes with a glimpse at the Halo ring itself. The good news is fans only have a few more months to see how it all ties together.

Halo: The Series Season 2 begins streaming on February 8, 2024.
