The cat has been a sign of luck as well as of calamity, making it the perfect symbol for roguelikes and roguelites like Death Must Die. Unlocking the Sign of the Cat achievement is surprisingly easy, but its hidden trigger condition means it might take some players a while to discover it, especially since there’s only a riddle to guide them. Those who do unlock it, however, will enjoy a unique passive buff as a reward. That makes this Sign one of the most interesting in the game. Here’s how to get the Sign of the Cat in Death Must Die.

Cats have nine lives according to the popular saying, and you’ll need to sacrifice all of them to unlock this achievement. To get the Sign of the Cat in Death Must Die, you must die nine times as Avoron, the Knight. You can die in any way you want, but you can’t select “End Run” or the death won’t count. That means you can earn these deaths the old-fashioned way, by playing the game until you eventually die, or you can just go AFK and let your enemies overwhelm you. Either way, it won’t take long to rack up nine deaths once you make it your goal.

The Sign of the Cat grants +8 revivals but comes at the cost of -333% Max Life. That’s right, you can keep coming back from the dead, but you’ll die much easier compared to characters who aren’t using this sign. Whether that tradeoff is worth it or not depends upon your strategy, but it’s worth experimenting with, even if your character doesn’t have much Luck. If you don’t like this sign, you can always unequip it and equip another at the Campfire. Other Signs offer better offensive power and are preferable if you’re trying to min-max, but if all you want to do is survive a run in Death Must Die, the Sign of the Cat might be for you.

Death Must Die is available for PC.
