Bending the universe to your will to make a giant factor was already tricky before the Dark Fog joined Dyson Sphere Program. The Rise of the Dark Fog update has brought a new antagonist and new forms of conflict to the game. Players who love the classic base-building and automation experience of games like DSP and Factorio have the option of disabling the Dark Fog, but including this potent new threat adds a lot to DSP. This update marks the game’s first foray into combat mechanics, and though the developer says there’s more to come, this update is already a great start. Here’s everything you need to know about the Dark Fog in Dyson Sphere Program.

Despite still being in early access, Dyson Sphere Program already packs in a ton of content, and the Rise of the Dark Fog update is just the game’s latest expansion. The Dark Fog is a cosmic threat made up of self-replicating machines and serves as a major antagonist in the game. For the first time, your factories will be directly threatened by an outside force. This enemy is intended to create a new layer of strategy. However, if you don’t want the Dark Fog in your game, you can disable it in the settings. You can also ratchet up the difficulty if you think it’s too weak.

Thankfully, you’ll have several ways to combat the Dark Fog. The game’s update includes defensive structures such as turrets and planetary defense shields. There are even drones that will automatically rebuild your damaged factory. Your Icarus mech can get in on the action too, allowing you to take more direct control of combat encounters. Though the Dark Fog will attack your factories, it won’t directly target the Dyson Sphere itself, at least for now. The developer has already expressed its intention to further expand players’ combat options, referencing the addition of space combat and space stations in a future update.

Dyson Sphere Program is available for PC.
