No game screams “infinite possibilities” quite like Mojang‘s, and your options only get more varied when you start enchanting. There are a lot of great enchantments to choose from in Minecraft, so it can be difficult to know which spells to slap onto your footwear. Whether you’re looking for speed, protection, or something more exotic, the game probably has something for you. Many enchantments have their pros and cons, but a few are so good that it’s easy to recommend them no matter what activities you’re interested in. Here are the best boot enchantments in Minecraft, ranked from good to fantastic.

5. Soul Speed

Soul Speed radically increases your movement speed when traveling on Soul Sand and Soul Soil. It’s a major increase even compared to sprinting, which makes it an easy pick if you’re going to spend much time on those terrain types. Because it only works on those blocks, however, you’ll need to create paths before traveling if you want to get much use out of it in other biomes. The bigger downside is the durability your boots will lose while crossing Soul Sand. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it does prevent Soul Speed from climbing any higher on our list of favorites.

4. Feather Falling

The ideal enchantment if you’re accident-prone or a fan of jumping off skyscrapers, Feather Falling reduces the damage you take from long falls. It’s the go-to enchantment for mountaineers, and the fact that you can combine it with other protective enchantments only makes it better. Though it doesn’t make you any faster by itself, Feather Falling is one of the best boot enchantments in Minecraft when it comes to shortcuts. Need to get down a mineshaft or to the bottom of a mysterious ravine? No problem. Just jump! The simplicity and effectiveness of this enchantment and its resulting strategies are hard to say no to.

3. Protection

Protection reduces HP loss from all sources of damage except magic and falling. A good Protection enchantment combined with Feather Falling means magic is pretty much the only thing you need to fear, which makes exploring Minecraft‘s procedural world a less scary proposition. This is a universally helpful enchantment, whether you’re into PvP or PvE. That flexibility is part of what makes Protection one of the best boot enchantments in Minecraft. Just slap it on at an Enchanting Table and then get back to whatever you were doing.

2. Unbreaking

Unbreaking multiplies the durability of your boots. That means no more wearing out your footwear after a single hike. Durability is one of the biggest issues in the game, so it’s easy to see why Unbreaking would be such a good boot enchantment. Tools benefit just as much from this enchantment, so you’re likely to apply Unbreaking everywhere as soon as you get access to it. Having to replace any piece of gear is a headache, especially if you took the time to enchant that gear first. This enchantment protects your favorite footwear, making it an easy sell.

1. Mending

The only thing better than extending an item’s durability is making that durability infinite. Mending repairs your damaged items using experience, which easily makes it the best boot enchantment in Minecraft. This enchantment is most useful if you build an EXP farm, effectively granting yourself infinite repairs whenever you want. Even if you get all your EXP from the wild, however, Mending will prove itself invaluable, since it makes keeping your boots intact an afterthought at most. For the longevity it grants, Mending is simply the best boot enchantment in Minecraft.

Minecraft is available for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
