2023 was a difficult year for the film and TV industry due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. While it has delayed some productions, we have plenty to look forward to coming in the new year. When it comes to our most anticipated TV shows coming in 2024, we have a little bit of everything to satisfy us. Some of our favorite shows will return to put us back in fantastical superhero worlds. In other cases, we will have brand new shows to introduce us to fresh places and faces.
10. Echo – January 9
Marvel is going into more mature territory with Echo. The MCU’s first TV-MA series brings back Hawkeye star Alaqua Cox to headline her own Disney Plus series. The historical milestone for the genre has us excited as this is the first live-action Native American-led superhero show and the first for a disabled character as Cox, like her character, is deaf and has a prosthetic leg. It makes for another great opportunity for the MCU to let people feel seen who rarely do.
Whether you’re a hardcore fan or a casual viewer, the show’s banner of Marvel Spotlight puts it in a category that will feel more standalone than other projects. While it does have a connection to Hawkeye due to Cox’s titled character and Vincent D’Onofrio returning as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin; it will largely be a story that requires little homework. All we have to do is watch to see this personal journey and difficult relationship between Maya and Wilson Fisk.
9. The Boys Season 4 – TBA 2024
One of Amazon’s best shows is returning with all of its provocative and gory glory. The Boys season 4 will mark the return of our most beloved and hated characters with the highest stakes yet, as the United States is more divided than ever over its superhero problem.
Coming off the events of Gen V, the college-based spinoff, we will have plenty of madness to tackle, from political strategies for a vice president supe to a virus that can kill superpowered people. Knowing the mind of Eric Kripke, we will have plenty of brutal hilarity to liven things up between the show’s sharp political commentary.
8. Mr. and Mrs. Smith – February 2
It looks like we’ll be tuning into Prime Video a lot in 2024, as it has another one of our most anticipated TV shows coming. Donald Glover has teamed up with Atlanta writer Francesca Sloane once again for the Mr. and Mrs. Smith remake. He will star alongside his writing duties as the newly-wed spy.
Furthermore, Maya Erskine and her husband will have to balance being sexy spies and the new marriage that was forced upon them due to work. It’s a departure from the 2005 film, as they are well aware of each other’s profession and must work together as spies, and husband and wife, to accomplish a mission.
7. Fallout – April 12
Video game adaptations have been much more consistent in recent years, particularly on TV. Bethesda’s quirky post-apocalyptic universe is heading to our screens with a fresh take that will expand the lore of Fallout. Set in Los Angeles, we’ll get to see a ruined Hollywood and all the dangers of trying to survive in an irradiated wasteland. From what we’ve seen, it hits everything fans would want as Lucy (Ella Purnell) goes out for an adventure, something gamers have done in the Commonwealth, Capital Wasteland, and Appalachia.
If we’re being honest, the low bar set by the majority of game adaptations keeps us a touch skeptical (We’re looking at you Doom and Street Fighter!). Thankfully, there are plenty of reasons to alleviate those feelings and keep us excited, as Fallout remains one of our most anticipated TV shows in 2024. It has a great cast with Yellowjackets star Purnell and Walton Goggins of so many great shows, like The Shield and Justified. Combine that with the impressive production design that brings the games to life; we’re hopeful this will be another win for the genre.
6. The Penguin – TBA 2024
Colin Farrell blew our minds as The Penguin in The Batman. Now, his excellent portrayal of the crime boss will be expanded in his own Max series. Set after the flooding caused by Paul Dano’s Riddler, Gotham is in disarray. That makes for the perfect opportunity to rise the ranks of the criminal underbelly for one bird-named criminal. We’re unsure how it will play out when Robert Pattinson suits back up as the Dark Knight, but we expect he will have a tougher foe next time they meet.
5. Invincible Season 2 – Early 2024
We got only a taste of Invincible Season 2. As animation is not an easy task, as the show teased before the first drop of episodes, it put a pause in the season to finish the rest of the batch. We’re on the edge of our seats waiting to find out how the second season concludes as Mark (Steven Yeun) must make heroic decisions while facing many personal consequences, largely tied to his homicidal father (J.K. Simmons). Whatever happens, we should brace ourselves for a high body count, similar to the jaw-dropping, bloody finale of the first season.
4. True Detective: Night Country (Season 4) – January 14
2019 was the last season of True Detective, making us wonder when HBO would bring back its crime mystery anthology series. Night Country looks like the break will be worth it, which has us over the moon with excitement as it looks to be much darker than previous seasons with some horror elements at play.
Alaskan detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) have a freezing cold mystery of dead, frozen scientists from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. This head-scratching conundrum will undoubtedly keep us coming back every week after chatting with friends and family about our crazy theories between new episodes.
3. House of the Dragon Season 2 – Summer 2024
Game of Thrones burned a bridge we thought could not be rebuilt. Then, House of the Dragon surprised us with how much quality could bring us back, despite some sour feelings. Season 2 is one of our most anticipated TV shows of 2024 to get our fantasy fix. We had some excitement before, but it was mostly building up to what would become a civil war within the Targaryen family as Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her uncle, Daemon (Matt Smith), are married and united against Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) side of the family. We’re expecting more brutality, scheming, and, of course, dragons.
2. The Bear Season 3 – TBA 2024
We’re ready for more family drama, food porn, and anxiety when The Bear returns. Last season greatly expanded its scope with celebrity cameos and new locations, both in and out of Chicago. Now that Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and crew have their restaurant up and running, it is all about getting out of debt and handling the usual relationship issues. One of the things we are most excited to see is the growth of characters. Season 2 set a high bar by growing the characters in ways we did not expect like Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) evolving and becoming a mature professional to do his part for the business.
1. Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 – February 4
Max has sunset many of our favorite shows this year, and it will continue in 2024. Larry David is saying goodbye to his hilariously despicable fictional self with the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. At least, that is what HBO is advertising, despite executive producer Jeff Schaffer leaving the show’s return up in the air.
The show was meant to go out in season 11, but a last-minute change gave us one more season. While we are unsure how it will end, we know there will be plenty of awkward humor to cringe and laugh at as this exaggerated version of the Seinfeld creator gets himself into the worst social situations.
