Tom Wilkinson, best known for his roles in Batman Begins and The Full Monty, has died. Reports indicate that Wilkinson passed away on December 30th in the UK, his home country. His death puts an end to a long and storied career including over 100 acting credits and 75 award nominations, between the Emmys, Oscars, and BAFTA awards, among others. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the Empire (OBE) in 2005. His cause of death hasn’t been revealed yet, as all statements regarding his passing just state that he “died suddenly” while at home.

Tom Wilkinson was born in 1948 in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, England. His acting career began in the 1970s and 80s after he graduated the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and some of his earlier roles include the TV miniseries Spyship (1983) and Miss Marple: A Pocketful of Rye (1985). Wilkinson’s career achieved meteoric success in the 1990s, however, with his role as Gerald, an ex-factory foreman turned member of a striptease routine, in The Full Monty (1997). His role in The Full Monty would earn him a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as an MTV Movie Award nomination. He recently reprised his role as Gerald in the The Full Monty, a 2023 Disney+ limited series based on the original movie.
Other than his role in The Full Monty, Tom Wilkinson was best known for his role as crime boss Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins (2005). The movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, starred Christian Bale as the caped crusader, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, and Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow. Wilksinson would also voice Carmine Falcone in the Batman Begins tie-in video game, produced by EA.
Tom Wilkinson’s official cause of death has not been revealed yet. In an official statement to BBC, his agent stated that he “died suddenly at home” while surrounded by his wife and family. Wilkinson is survived by his wife Diana, who he married in 1988 after the pair starred together in First Among Equals (1986), and the couple’s two daughters, Alice and Molly.
