The Mushroom Kingdom is coming to life! Following an announcement last year, Nintendo and Universal Creative shared details about their upcoming theme park project. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Super Mario Bros., and Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative detailed their visions for Nintendo’s involvement with Universal theme parks. Nintendo will be working with Universal Parks & Resorts to bring their colorful and exciting games into the real world. Nintendo-themed areas will come to Universal Studios’s Orlando, Hollywood, and Japan locations. An announcement by Nintendo promises “an entire realm filled with iconic Nintendo excitement, gameplay, heroes, and villains.”
Guests will be able to interact with their favorite Nintendo games in immersive ways. These special environments will feature attractions, shops, and restaurants, all designed to give fans an authentic gaming adventure. This experience will not be exclusive to fans, though. Nintendo has stated that anyone, regardless of age or experience with video games, will find something to enjoy. Creative plans for these areas are still in development. While no specific details about Nintendo areas are available yet, they will open separately over the course of several years. Each Universal theme park will reveal its plans as they develop. Fans won’t have to wait long to find out more, as the first of these announcements will be coming soon.
Nintendo has made efforts to immerse its fans before. A Zelda escape game was announced in the same month as its Universal theme park plans. However, this will be Nintendo’s largest immersive project yet. With a Gears of War film in development, Universal Studios has shown an interest in providing new experiences for video game fans. Nintendo also looks to bring its beloved gaming history into the future with the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch.
