A new series will not be returning for another season. Max has canceled Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t after two seasons. The Barbie star served as an executive producer and writer of the series with showrunner Syreeta Singleton. The series followed estranged friends Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), who rekindled their high school friendship to start a rap duo with ambitions to become massive stars in the music industry. The series also starred Jonica Booth, RJ Cycler, Jaboukie Young-White, Daniel Augustin, Frankie Love Knight, and Nijah Brenea.

Issa Rae Speaks Up About Rap Sh!t Getting Canceled at Max

As the news hit, Issa Rae spoke to Variety about the end of Rap Sh!t. She talked about how “proud” she was and “grateful for Syreeta, our cast, writers, and crew.” The star also gave her “love” to the audience “that tuned in weekly to root for our girls.”

Alongside the creator, the showrunner had her thanks to give out. She said she was “so proud of the work” accomplished in both seasons. She said the team “created something fun, raw, and original, and we did it our way!” After all was said and done, she “will forever be grateful to Issa, our incredible cast, the amazing writers and crew that made this show possible.”

Issa Rae had reteamed up with HBO for Rap Sh!t after the successful run of her Emmy-winning series Insecure. The series debuted on the platform in 2022, a year after the end of Insecure. By the end of 2023, fans got the second season, which ended in December.

The creator of the now-deceased series has plenty of work ahead of her. She is executive producing the HBO docuseries Seen & Heard. She will also reprise her role as Jesica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
