A New Silent Hill Game Just Launched and is Free to Play

This is not a drill, it’s a surprise Silent Hill drop.

At the recent PlayStation State of Play event, Konami made the massive reveal that a new game in the classic horror franchise titled Silent Hill: The Short Message would be launched shortly after the end of the event and that it would be completely free-to-play. Konami has recently made huge strides to revive the dormant series with multiple new title announcements and the remake of Silent Hill 2.

The official PlayStation website calls Silent Hill: The Short Message a “short-form Silent Hill title” that is intended to give fans, both new and returning, a taste of what the series is about and where it’s headed in the modern day. The trailer for the game that played during the State of Play event shows off the survival-horror elements that anyone would expect from a title like this, but it doesn’t necessarily present anything that looks so classically Silent Hill. The main character is trapped in every shot that’s seen (No view of the town itself if that’s even where it’s set), none of the classical enemy types make an appearance (Sorry, no Pyramid Heads, it seems), and no puzzle-solving. That doesn’t necessarily mean none of that is in there, it just doesn’t make its presence known in the trailer.

Konami announced after the trailer played that Silent Hill: The Short Message would be made available shortly after State of Play as a free-to-play experience. It’s clear the developer and publisher is trying to make sure there is as much of an audience as possible not only for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake but also for every other Silent Hill property that’s going to be introduced in the coming years. This appears to be just the beginning.
